Calling this one done for now. Such a fun character so I’ll probably revisit him to do some more animation tests but I’ll need to re rig him in t pose first.
For the majority of my time at tangent animation I was constantly trying to get moved into the character modelling department. I had applied to be an animator originally when I had graduated college but the Winnipeg studio only hired asset artists so I decided to focus on modelling to get my foot in the door. After enough practicing and begging I ended up getting some opportunities to work on some characters which was a huge insight into learning the secret sauce of animation.
During the production of monkey king I was able to work on one of the sea creatures designed by @juliaon_art. With the help of @richardchen.draws, @theandycarney, @mrbonifacio and @bmo_unicorns I was able to make one of the most polished characters I’d ever worked on. It was one of the most satisfying moments of my career. It was then and there that I knew I had picked the right gig.
Unfortunately the character was cut from the final movie and I have no evidence of it ever existing, that’s just how it goes sometimes.
It’s been a couple years since then and with many more characters of practice under my belt I’m happy to say I’m starting to get comfortable animating. Taking advantage of the lull in my career I’ve decided to spend some time to shift my portfolios focus to animation, story and visual development positions.
Thanks to everyone for following my journey and thank you @juliaon_art for your wonderful design work 🙏
